Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission
Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission has been selected for December’s Nonprofit Spotlight!
Who They Are:
Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission serves those experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia. The Mission offers an array of homeless day services and clinics to men and women. Additionally, the Mission has a 30-day men’s emergency shelter which is Philadelphia’s largest for men and offers a 12-month transitional housing program to men. The Mission relies on the generous private contributions of caring individuals, families, churches, and businesses.
Founded in 1878, Sunday Breakfast has reached out to the homeless in Philadelphia for more than 140 years. Originally named the Sunday Breakfast Association, the name was changed a few years ago to reflect the expanded services as a Rescue Mission. Rescue Missions are similar to a traditional homeless shelter but focus on caring for the spiritual needs in addition to the practical needs of people.
Currently, Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission is the only place in Philadelphia that serves 3 meals a day 365 days of the year.
What kind of support does the Mission need the most right now?
Sunday Breakfast relies entirely on financial support from individuals, businesses, churches and other private organizations. Due to supply chain problems, and price increases, the Mission has already exceeded its anticipated food budget before the end of the year. It is important that they get the funds necessary to continue providing the meals and care to all who walk through their doors. Those who want to help support their work can donate here.
What is one thing you wish people knew about the Mission that they may not?
At Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission, they treat all those who come through their doors with dignity, compassion and respect. They meet the practical and spiritual needs of those who are hungry, homeless, and hurting in Philadelphia. In addition to men’s emergency shelter services and transitional men’s housing, they serve three meals a day, 365 days a year. These meals are provided for any men, women, and children who are in need.
What is the most unique donation the Mission has received?
This past year Sunday Breakfast received a very generous donation from 76ers player Joel Embiid. Not only did he donate the money to the Mission, but the 76ers also threw a playoff game watch party in their parking lot that included music, the 76ers band and dancers, food, drinks, games, and TVs to watch the game. This was a unique donation that provided an opportunity for their guests to enjoy a fun, engaging event.
